Assessment Reports
Measuring Our Achievement

Assessment of our students and schools in the St. Helena School District is ongoing and multifaceted. We use multiple measures throughout the school year to keep current with each student's achievements and needs.

Some of our reports and assessments are state and nationwide, and these help us to measure how our students are doing in relation to their peers in other towns, counties, and states. These include the SARC, APR, API, AYP, STAR and CAHSEE, as described below.

The Student Accountability Report Card (SARC): "Since November 1988, state law has required all public schools receiving state funding to prepare and distribute a SARC. A similar requirement is also contained in the federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). The purpose of the report card is to provide parents and the community with important information about each public school." This information includes, "student achievement, environment, resources, and demographics."  Click here to access SHUSD SARC reports.

Accountability Progress Reporting (APR): APR is "California's integrated accountability system that reports both the state Academic Performance Index (API), and the federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and Program Improvement (PI)." St. Helena Unified School District is not classified as a PI district. The API and AYP are the two reports that comprise our APR.
  • The Academic Performance Index (API): "The cornerstone of California's Public Schools Accountability Act of 1999; measures the academic performance and growth of schools on a variety of academic measures."
  • The Adequate Yearly Progress Report (AYP): "A statewide accountability system mandated by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 which requires each state to ensure that all schools and districts make Adequate Yearly Progress."
Standardized Testing & Reporting (STAR): "The 2007 STAR Program included five components:
  • California Standards Tests (CSTs)
  • Standards-based Tests in Spanish (STS)—grades 2, 3, and 4
  • California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA)
  • California Achievement Tests, Sixth Edition Survey (CAT/6 Survey)—grades 3 and 7
  • Aprenda: La prueba de logros en español, Tercera edición (Aprenda 3)—grades 5 through 11
The CSTs are a major component of California’s accountability system for schools and districts. CST and CAPA results are the major component used for calculating each school’s Academic Performance Index (API). These results are also used for determining if elementary and middle schools are making adequate yearly progress (AYP) in helping all students become proficient on the state’s content standards as required by the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001."

California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE): “Beginning with the Class of 2006, all public school students will be required to pass the exam to earn a high school diploma.” “The primary purpose of the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) is to significantly improve pupil achievement in public high schools and to ensure that pupils who graduate from public high schools can demonstrate grade level competency in reading, writing, and mathematics.”

Ongoing Assessment in Our Schools: Assessment is more than an annual statewide test; it is the daily attention to class involvement, homework, reading, class test scores, and other measures of how a student is doing. Teachers, counselors, specialists, and staff members work together to make sure each student in our district receives the instruction, attention, and resources he or she needs to succeed.
